The Liebfrauenkirche, or Church of Our Lady, is one of the three main Evangelical churches in the German city of Halberstadt. It shares the cathedral square with the cathedral itself, and both churches were once part of the former cathedral fortress of the bishops of Halberstadt. The church celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 2005, marking a millennium of religious and architectural history.
Over the centuries, the Liebfrauenkirche underwent significant architectural changes. In the 14th century, the flat ceiling of the nave was replaced by cross-ribbed vaults, adding a new dimension to the church's interior. In the 16th century, the baptismal chapel received a Gothic-style eastern closure, reflecting the evolving architectural styles of the time.
One of the most notable features of the Liebfrauenkirche is the choir screen from the period 1200-1210. This screen features Christ, Mary, and the twelve apostles in almost life-size relief. Despite the church's long history and the many changes it has undergone, this choir screen is partly still entirely original, offering visitors a glimpse into the church's past.
