Levens Hall and Topiary Garden and its collection

The buildings that can be seen today at Levens Hall largely date back to the 16th century. This was a period when the Bellinghams, who owned the estate at the time, expanded the facility. Notably, the ceilings and paneling from this era have been preserved, offering visitors a glimpse into the architectural styles and craftsmanship of the time.

Historic Garden Design at Levens Hall

The garden at Levens Hall, which was laid out between 1694 and 1712, is a significant feature of the estate. Guillaume Beaumont, the former head gardener of James II, was responsible for its design. Beaumont, who also contributed to the design of Hampton Court Palace, divided the garden into four parts, a layout that has been preserved to this day. This offers visitors a chance to experience a historic garden design firsthand.

Public Access and Additional Attractions at Levens Hall

The garden at Levens Hall is open to the public, offering a unique opportunity to explore its historic design and features. In addition to the garden, visitors can also see Bagot goats and several steam engines from Foden, Fowler, Puritan and Sentinel. These additional attractions add to the overall experience of visiting Levens Hall.

Levens Hall and Topiary Garden has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Levens Hall and Topiary Garden is a historic estate located near Kendal in England's Lake District. The hall itself is a fine example of Elizabethan architecture, while the gardens are world-renowned for their topiary. Visitors often appreciate the well-preserved interiors of the hall, which showcase period furnishings and artworks. The gardens are the main attraction, featuring intricate topiary designs that have been maintained for centuries. Many find the geometric shapes and living sculptures impressive, though some may feel the garden layout is a bit maze-like. The on-site café receives mixed reviews, with some praising the quality of food and others finding it overpriced. Overall, Levens Hall offers a blend of history and horticulture that appeals to many, but might not suit those seeking more interactive or modern attractions.
