The Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation is a historic site located in Thibodaux, Louisiana. It holds a significant place in the history of the region and is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The plantation offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of sugar production in the area, as well as the broader history of southern Louisiana.
Despite suffering extensive damage during Hurricane Ida in 2021, Laurel Valley was able to reopen just one month later. Today, the plantation offers guided tours, providing visitors with an in-depth look at the property and its history. This resilience is a testament to the importance of preserving and sharing the plantation's history with the public.
Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation is not only a historic site but also a living testament to the sugar industry in the United States. With about 40 original structures still standing, it is the largest surviving 19th- and 20th-century sugar plantation complex in the country. Moreover, it continues to operate as a working sugarcane farm, providing a unique opportunity to see this historic industry in action.
