The Lantern Museum, known as Farolen museoa in Basque and Museo de los Faroles in Spanish, is situated in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the province of Álava, in the Basque Country of Spain. This museum is home to the lanterns used in the Rosary of the Lanterns procession, a significant event celebrated every 4th of August during the Virgen Blanca Festivities.
The tradition of the Rosary procession dates back to the early 17th century. However, the use of lanterns, which are now a central part of the procession, was not introduced until 1895. These lanterns were made of metal and glass, and were lit using candles.
The building that serves as the Lantern Museum was constructed in 1901, with the support of the then mayor, Federico Baraibar. The design of the building was the work of local architect Fausto Íñiguez de Betolaza. This building houses the lanterns throughout the year.
As of 2019, the Lantern Museum housed a total of 273 lanterns. These lanterns are used in the Rosary of the Lanterns procession and represent various elements of the Rosary prayers.
