Lanercost Priory and its collection

Lanercost Priory
Source

Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, the Augustinian priory of Lanercost was much involved in the Anglo-Scottish wars. The abbey suffered terribly from Scottish raids, being sacked at least four times. It was finally dissolved by Henry VIII in 1537, but today its 13th-century church remains well-preserved, standing to its full height. Part is now in use as the parish church. New information panels tell visitors about the priory and its later conversion to a grand mansion, and unique 16th-century wallpaintings are on display in the Dacre Hall.

Visitors appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and the opportunity to explore the site at their own pace. The on-site exhibition provides informative displays about the priory's history, including its connections to Edward I and the Anglo-Scottish wars. Many reviewers note the picturesque setting, with the priory nestled against a backdrop of rolling hills. The staff are generally described as friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the visitor experience with their insights. Some visitors mention that the audio guide, when available, is particularly helpful in understanding the site's significance. While most find the entrance fee reasonable, a few suggest that more interactive elements or guided tours could further improve the experience. The small gift shop and café receive mixed reviews, with some praising the quality of refreshments and others finding the options limited.
