The Lake Biwa Museum, also known as Biwahaku, is a prefectural museum located in the city of Kusatsu, in Shiga Prefecture. It is situated on the Karasuma Peninsula, near the shores of Lake Biwa, which is the oldest lake in Japan. The museum is dedicated to the interpretation of Lake Biwa and its history, which dates back over 400 million years.
The Lake Biwa Museum operates from 9:30 to 17:00, with the last entry permitted at 16:30. It is important to note that the museum is closed on Mondays, except when a Monday falls on a holiday. Additionally, the museum is closed on the days following holidays, unless these days are Saturdays or Sundays. The museum also observes a closure during the New Year holidays.
The Lake Biwa Museum is easily accessible by various modes of transportation. It is a 25-minute bus ride from Ohmi Railway's Kusatsu Station. Alternatively, a 20-minute Shinkansen ride from Kyoto Station will take you to Kusatsu Station. From there, the museum can also be reached by taxi from Moriyama Station. If you are coming from Otsu Port, a ferry service from Biwako Kisen Steamship Co., Ltd. is available. For those driving, the museum can be accessed via the Meishin Expressway, taking the Ritto interchange, then continuing on National Route 1, then taking Prefectural Route 31 and finally the lake road. Parking is available at the entrance of the museum.
