The Kyoto Railway Museum, previously known as the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum until 2016, is a significant railway museum situated in Shimogyō-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The museum, owned by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) and operated by the Transportation Culture Promotion Foundation, was originally opened in 1972. It underwent a significant expansion and modernization in 2016, transforming it into the Kyoto Railway Museum we know today.

Exhibition Areas and the 1914 Roundhouse

The Kyoto Railway Museum is divided into various exhibition areas, one of which includes a 20-track roundhouse built in 1914. This roundhouse is an Important Cultural Property as designated by the Japanese government. It is the oldest reinforced-concrete car shed still in existence in Japan. The roundhouse was built surrounding a turntable, adding to its historical and architectural significance.
