The Korean War National Museum was established in 1997 and underwent a reorganization in 2010. The aim of this reorganization was to expand the museum and establish an accredited facility in New York City. This shows the museum's commitment to broadening its reach and making its exhibits accessible to a wider audience.
The Denis J. Healy Freedom Center, a 10,000 square foot facility of the Korean War National Museum, was operational from 2009 to 2017 in Springfield, Illinois. This facility served as a significant part of the museum, providing a space for the display of various exhibits and artifacts related to the Korean War.
The Korean War National Museum closed its doors in August 2017. In March 2018, it was announced that the artifacts that were previously displayed in the museum had been moved to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri. This means that while the museum in Springfield is no longer operational, the artifacts and exhibits it once housed can still be viewed at their new location.
