The Knappenrode Energy Factory, also known as Energiefabrik Knappenrode, is a significant part of the Saxon Industrial Museum. It is located in the eastern part of Saxony, specifically in the southeast of Hoyerswerda city center. The museum is situated on the grounds of the former Knappenrode briquette factory, which has been decommissioned and is now a protected monument.
Following its closure in 1993, the Knappenrode briquette factory was preserved, including its impressive brick architecture and numerous outbuildings equipped with steam-powered briquetting technology. The site was opened as a museum on June 18, 1994, and has been a part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage since 2005, offering visitors a glimpse into the industrial past.
The museum underwent a comprehensive renovation between 2017 and 2020. This included redesigning the access and entrance areas, conceptualizing and implementing a new multimedia-oriented permanent exhibition, and installing barrier-free access and a new visitor guidance system. The renovation, which cost approximately 15.4 million €, was funded through various sources and funding programs.

The Knappenrode Energy Museum, located in Hoyerswerda, Germany, offers visitors an informative look into the history of energy production in the region. Housed in a former briquette factory, the museum provides an authentic industrial setting that enhances the overall experience. Visitors generally appreciate the well-preserved machinery and equipment on display, which helps to illustrate the technological developments in energy production over time. The museum's exhibits cover various aspects of coal mining and processing, giving insights into the area's industrial heritage. Many reviewers mention the knowledgeable staff and guided tours as highlights, providing detailed explanations that bring the history to life. However, some visitors note that the information provided could be more comprehensive, and additional languages for non-German speakers would be beneficial. The outdoor area, including old locomotives and mining equipment, is often cited as interesting but could benefit from more detailed explanations. While the museum offers a solid educational experience, some visitors feel it may not be engaging enough for younger children or those without a specific interest in industrial history. The location is praised for its accessibility and parking facilities. Overall, the Knappenrode Energy Museum is considered a worthwhile visit for those interested in industrial heritage and the history of energy production, though it may not appeal to all audiences equally.
