The Kirchner Museum Davos, located in Davos, Switzerland, is an art museum dedicated to the life and work of the German Expressionist artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The museum houses a large collection of Kirchner's works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and textile works. It also includes almost all of the artist's sketchbooks and photographs. The museum's collection represents all the important themes in Kirchner's oeuvre, from his Die Brücke period to his late work while living in Switzerland.
The Kirchner Museum was founded in Davos in 1982. Initially, it was housed in the old post office building in Davos Platz. The museum was established with the help of Swiss art collector and dealer Eberhard W. Kornfeld, who had previously acquired Kirchner's final house on Wildboden in Frauenkirch, near Davos.
On September 4, 1992, a new building for the Kirchner Museum was opened. This building was donated by Roman Norbert Ketterer, the administrator of Kirchner's estate. The new building allowed for the expansion of the museum's collection, which included 519 works at the time of its opening.
The Kirchner Museum Davos was the first major commission carried out by Zurich architects Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer. The museum's design, which combines functionality and aesthetics, is considered a pioneering work in a new approach to museum architecture. In 2012, the museum received the Daylight Award from the Velux Foundation, the most valuable architecture prize in Switzerland.

The Kirchner Museum Davos is dedicated to the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a prominent German expressionist painter who lived in Davos for the latter part of his life. The museum houses an extensive collection of Kirchner's paintings, drawings, and sculptures, offering visitors a comprehensive look at the artist's evolution and creative process.
The museum's architecture, designed by Gigon/Guyer, is often praised for its modern and minimalist approach, which complements Kirchner's bold and colorful works. The building's use of natural light enhances the viewing experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the vibrant colors and expressive brushstrokes characteristic of Kirchner's style.
Visitors generally appreciate the well-curated exhibitions that rotate regularly, showcasing different aspects of Kirchner's oeuvre and occasionally featuring works by his contemporaries. The museum provides informative audio guides and detailed descriptions, which help in understanding the context and significance of the artworks.
Some reviewers note that while the museum is not large, it offers a focused and in-depth look at Kirchner's work, making it particularly appealing to art enthusiasts and those interested in expressionism. However, casual visitors might find the museum somewhat specialized and may spend less time here compared to larger, more diverse art institutions.
A few visitors mention that the admission price can be considered a bit high for the size of the museum, but most agree that the quality of the collection justifies the cost. The museum's location in Davos, a town known primarily for skiing and conferences, adds an interesting cultural dimension to the area.
Overall, the Kirchner Museum Davos is well-regarded for its significant collection, thoughtful curation, and architectural merit, offering a valuable insight into the life and work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and the expressionist movement.
