The Kettenschmiedemuseum, located in the Warstein district of Sichtigvor, offers a unique insight into the manual production of chains. This process, once practiced by chain smiths, is showcased in a detailed and engaging manner. Visitors can learn about the traditional techniques and skills involved in this craft, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.
The Kettenschmiedemuseum is a faithful replica of a small home forge, which was a common sight in the Möhne valley from 1840 to 1970. These forges were often operated as a main or secondary occupation by the residents of Sichtigvor and other nearby places. This gives visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the working conditions of the past.
The museum building was erected in 1984 by the Arbeitskreis für Heimatpflege des Kirchspiels Mülheim, complete with two functional hearths. In 1990, a water wheel was added, which, unlike in historical models, has been used to provide lighting for the museum since 1997 with the help of a direct current generator. This unique feature adds to the authenticity of the museum and enhances the visitor experience.
