The Kasuga Grand Shrine, also known as Kasuga-taisha, is a significant Shinto shrine situated in Nara, Japan. Established in 769 AD, the shrine has undergone several reconstructions throughout the centuries. It is a symbol of the Fujiwara clan and is renowned for its architectural style, Kasuga-zukuri, named after the shrine's honden (main sanctuary).
The Kasuga Grand Shrine, along with the nearby Kasugayama Primeval Forest, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These sites are part of the 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara', a collection of significant cultural and historical landmarks in the region.
The Kasuga Grand Shrine hosts two significant festivals, Setsubun Mantoro in February and Obon Mantoro in August. During these festivals, hundreds of lanterns at the shrine are lit simultaneously, creating a breathtaking spectacle that attracts many visitors.
