Los jardines del Real, also known as Jardín de Viveros, is a public urban park located in the city of Valencia, Spain. The park was named after the Royal Palace that was situated within it until 1810. The other name, Viveros, comes from the term 'huerta de Vivel', which referred to a lagoon or nursery that supplied irrigation water. This park has a rich history and offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city life.
Historical Significance of the Park
The park was originally associated with the orchards of the almunia, or pleasure palace, built by the kings of the Taifa of Valencia and expanded later. The gardens were used as nurseries at least since 1560, when King Philip II commissioned a large number of orange and lemon trees to beautify the gardens of his Aranjuez Palace. This historical connection adds a unique charm to the park.
Attractions within the Park
Inside the park is the Valencia Natural Science Museum, a rationalist building by Luis Gay Ramos, with a wide collection of fossils. There is also an entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts that leads to the Patio del Embajador Vich, and the archaeological remains of the old Royal Palace uncovered in 2009. These attractions offer a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Valencia.
