Highland, previously known as Ash Lawn–Highland, is a historic estate located near Charlottesville, Virginia. It was the home of James Monroe, one of the Founding Fathers and the fifth president of the United States. The estate is situated next to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, adding to its historical significance.

Highland Today

Highland currently functions as a 535-acre working farm, a museum, and a venue for arts performances. It is managed by the College of William and Mary and is open to the public throughout the year. However, please note that the opening hours are limited from October through March.

Historical Structures at Highland

The Highland estate today comprises several historical structures, including an 1818 guest house, an addition from the 1850s, and a Victorian style farmhouse from the 1870s. Visitors can also see a reconstructed three-bay slave quarter, a gable-roofed ice house, an overseer's cabin with an exterior end brick chimney, and a smokehouse with a pyramidal roof.
