Jackson Barracks, located in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana, serves as the headquarters of the Louisiana National Guard. The base was established in 1834, originally known as New Orleans Barracks. However, in 1866, it was renamed in honor of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, who was a prominent general during the War of 1812.
Jackson Barracks has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976, marking its significance in American history. The barracks were designed to house four infantry companies and were equipped with a prison, a storehouse, and four 3-story guard towers. These features highlight the strategic importance of the barracks in the past.
Jackson Barracks is home to the Ansel M. Stroud Jr. Military History and Weapons Museum. This museum contains artifacts from each of the nine major United States conflicts, offering visitors a comprehensive look at the country's military history. As a member of the Army Museum System, the museum adheres to high standards of preservation and presentation of these historical artifacts.
