The museum was originally located at the Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica, California until May 2015. In May 2016, it was officially renamed as the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA) and relocated to Los Angeles's Downtown Arts District. The museum reopened to the public in September 2017, offering a new location for art enthusiasts to explore.
The museum's mission is to focus on pivotal but under-recognized moments and figures in the history of contemporary art and culture.
