Decommissioning of the Mackinaw
The Mackinaw had a long and storied history, but due to its age and the high cost of maintenance, it was decommissioned on June 10, 2006. It was replaced by a smaller, more multifunctional vessel, the USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30). This transition marked a new era in the history of icebreaking on the Great Lakes.
The Mackinaw as a Museum Ship
Today, the Mackinaw is proudly displayed as a museum ship at the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum. Located in the port of Mackinaw, the museum offers visitors a chance to explore this historic vessel and learn about its significant role in the maritime history of the Great Lakes. The Mackinaw shares its berth with the SS Chief Wawatam, a train-ferry and icebreaker, adding to the rich maritime display.
