In 1945, Hunter House was purchased to prevent its demolition. This act led to the formation of the Preservation Society of Newport County, a group dedicated to preserving and promoting the area's historic landmarks. In recognition of its historical significance, Hunter House was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 24, 1968. Today, it stands as a testament to Newport's rich history and the efforts to preserve it.
Hunter House showcases period furnishings by Townsend and Goddard, as well as paintings, including one by Gilbert Stuart. Visitors can also admire the restored 18th-century garden. The house is known for its intricate woodwork, including a carved pineapple over the doorway, a symbol of welcome throughout Colonial America. These features provide a unique insight into the lifestyle and aesthetics of the period.
