After Reuben A. Reeves moved away from Palestine in 1850, the Howard House was purchased by George R. Howard, a local merchant. Howard, who attained the rank of colonel from his service with the Tennessee State Militia and also served with the Confederate States Army, held numerous state and local elected positions, including the mayor of Palestine. This connection to a prominent local figure adds another layer of historical interest to the house.
The city of Palestine purchased the Howard House in 1964 and transformed it into a museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1993, further cementing its historical significance. The Howard House Museum is owned by the city and has been furnished to reflect its late 19th-century appearance. It is open for tours and special functions by appointment, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.
