The House of Sugar, situated in the town of Les Trois-Îlets in Martinique, is a regional museum that provides a comprehensive history of sugarcane from the time it was introduced to Martinique in the mid-17th century. This museum is easily visible from the road between Les Trois-Îlets and Rivière-Salée.
The Martinique Association of the House of Sugar was established in 1981, primarily by teachers from the Victor-Schœlcher high school. The association's mission is to preserve and promote the rich industrial sugar history of Martinique, which was threatened by the closure of numerous sugar plantations and the disappearance of central factories that had been the backbone of the island's economic and social life for three centuries.
In May 1987, the House of Sugar was established by the association on a domain spanning more than 2 hectares. This site was previously home to the old Vatable distillery, which was founded by Justin Mario in 1916 and produced the rum 'Le Soleil' until 1962.
