The National Dairy Shrine's museum is situated in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. It shares a visitor center with the Hoard Historical Museum, which was once the house of William D. Hoard. This unique setup allows visitors to explore both the history of the dairy industry and the local history of Fort Atkinson in one location.
The National Dairy Shrine's museum houses a variety of exhibits that delve into the history of dairying. The collection includes historical dairying objects such as butter churns, milking machines, a treadle, and items used in the Babcock test for determining the fat content of milk. This test was developed at the nearby University of Wisconsin–Madison, adding a local touch to the museum's exhibits.
The Hoard Historical Museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the local history of Fort Atkinson. Its permanent exhibits include mounted bird dioramas, Native American artifacts, information about Sauk chief Black Hawk and the 1832 Black Hawk War, works of local poet Lorine Niedecker, quilts and antique clothing, and the mid-19th century period Foster House. These exhibits provide a comprehensive view of the area's rich history.
