Farmers' Bank holds a unique position as the first bank museum of its kind in Virginia. It was incorporated in the year 1812 and opened its doors to the public in Petersburg, Virginia in 1817. This historical establishment offers a glimpse into the banking history of the region and the country.
The Farmers' Bank building is a three-story structure built in the Federal style. It served as a frequent meeting place for the community. The first floor of the building was dedicated to the banking area, which included the vault. The third floor was the residence of the bank manager and his family. This layout provides a unique insight into the living and working conditions of the time.
Today, the building of Farmers' Bank houses the Petersburg Visitors Center. Visitors have the opportunity to see a printing press and scales for weighing gold, offering a tangible connection to the past. The living quarters on the third floor have also been restored, providing a glimpse into the domestic life of the 19th century.
