The Dumas Brothel, now a museum, is located in the heart of downtown Butte, Montana. It was a well-known brothel from 1890 to 1982, making it the longest continuously operating brothel in the United States. This historic establishment offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing visitors with an understanding of the social history of the time.

Architectural Significance of Dumas Brothel

The Dumas Brothel was built in 1890 by the Nadeau Investment Company in the Victorian style. It is the last remaining example of this type of architecture, making it a significant landmark. The interior of the building, illuminated by skylights and colored windows, could also serve for dance events. The current layout with 43 rooms corresponds to a subsequent division; the brothel was originally planned with significantly fewer rooms for an exquisite audience.

Restoration and Reopening of Dumas Brothel Museum

The Dumas Brothel Museum was closed for restoration work in 2005 and reopened in 2008. This period of restoration allowed for the preservation and enhancement of the building's historic features, ensuring that visitors can fully appreciate the architectural and social significance of the brothel.

The Historic Dumas Brothel Museum in Butte-Silver Bow offers visitors a glimpse into the city's colorful past. Housed in a well-preserved Victorian-era building, the museum provides an educational experience about the social history of Butte's red-light district. Visitors appreciate the informative guided tours that shed light on the lives of the women who worked there and the broader context of the mining boom era. The museum's authenticity is often noted, with many original furnishings and artifacts on display. However, some guests find the content to be mature and potentially uncomfortable. The small size of the museum means tours can feel rushed during busy times. While many find the experience enlightening, others feel the admission price is a bit high for the tour length. Despite these minor drawbacks, most visitors find the Historic Dumas Brothel Museum to be an interesting and thought-provoking attraction that adds depth to Butte's historical narrative.
