The Highland Light, also known as Cape Cod Light, is an active lighthouse located on the Cape Cod National Seashore in North Truro, Massachusetts. The current tower, which was erected in 1857, replaced two earlier towers that were built in 1797 and 1831. This makes it the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Cape Cod.
The grounds of the Highland Light are open to the public year-round. However, the lighthouse itself is only open from May until late October. During this period, guided tours are available for visitors who want to learn more about the history and significance of this landmark.
The Highland Light was converted to electric operation in 1932, equipped with a 1000-watt beacon. In 1946, its Fresnel lens was replaced by modern aerobeacons, initially by a Crouse-Hinds DCB-36 double rotating light, and later by a Carlisle & Finch DCB-224, with a second unit as a backup. Although the Fresnel lens was severely damaged during its removal, fragments of it are on display in the on-site museum.
