The Vareler Heimatmuseum, located on the Neumarkt, has been a part of the city since 1954. The Neumarkt itself was established in 1755, making it a location with a rich history. This museum is housed in a building that was originally a half-timbered house built around 1677, which received its current facade in the early 19th century.
The Vareler Heimatmuseum offers a comprehensive look at Varel's history, with exhibits spanning from prehistoric times to the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors can see artifacts from the Chauken period, items from the 19th and 20th centuries, and souvenirs from the former German colonies of Varel residents who belonged to the imperial navy.
The Vareler Heimatmuseum is planning several expansions to enhance the visitor experience. These include a lecture room, a memorial room for Lothar Meyer, a tin room (reflecting Varel's history as a stronghold of tin casting), a watchmaker's workshop, and a historical children's room. These additions will provide a more immersive and educational experience for visitors.
