Grottoes of Catullus

The Grotte di Catullo, also known as Grotten des Catull, are the remnants of a Roman villa that was constructed in the 1st century AD. This historical site is located at the northernmost point of the Sirmione peninsula, which is situated on the southern shore of Lake Garda. The villa offers a glimpse into the architectural prowess of the Romans and their way of life during that era.

Size and Layout of Grotte di Catullo

The Grotte di Catullo is a vast site, covering an area of 167 meters in length and 105 meters in width. The villa was built over three floors, spanning a total area of about 20,000 square meters. This expansive layout gives visitors a sense of the grandeur and scale of Roman architecture.

Architectural Features of Grotte di Catullo

The main entrance of the Grotte di Catullo was located on the south side, where the bath facilities were also situated. The villa was designed with covered verandas on its long sides, providing shelter and a place to relax. A panoramic terrace on the north side offered a stunning view of Lake Garda, adding to the overall appeal of the site.

The Antiquarium at Grotte di Catullo

To the right of the entrance of the Grotte di Catullo, visitors will find the Antiquarium. This area houses a collection of artifacts from both pre-Roman and post-Roman times. These finds provide a broader context of the history of the site and the surrounding region, offering visitors a more comprehensive understanding of the area's past.
