The Governor Oglesby Mansion in Decatur, Illinois, offers visitors a glimpse into 19th-century American history and architecture. This restored Victorian-era home showcases the life of Richard J. Oglesby, a former Illinois governor and U.S. Senator. Visitors appreciate the well-preserved period furnishings and decor that reflect the lifestyle of a prominent political figure from that era. The tour guides are often praised for their knowledge and enthusiasm, providing interesting anecdotes about the Oglesby family and the home's history. However, some visitors note that the tour can be relatively short and that the mansion's size is modest compared to other historical homes. The garden surrounding the property is well-maintained and adds to the overall charm of the site. While the museum offers an educational experience, it may not have enough interactive elements or extensive exhibits to keep younger visitors engaged for long periods. Overall, the Governor Oglesby Mansion is a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts and those interested in local Illinois heritage, but it may not be a full-day destination.
DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! I used to go here often as a child and had great memories. Just went there for a family/holiday get together and had THE WORST EXPERIENCE!!!! I will never go again and never spend another penny there. The rooms kinda sucked and were horribly overpriced, the food was not good quality (over priced), and the security there was a JOKE. They ruined the holiday for us. So saddened that a place I used to love has been completely tarnished. Don’t make the same mistake I did. I can’t express it enough…DO NOT GO HERE!!!!
