Glyptothek and its collection

Glyptothek
Source

The Glyptothek Munich is a museum for ancient Greek and Roman statues, which is located in the Kunstareal Munich of the Bavarian capital Munich. The Glyptothek was commissioned by the Bavarian King Ludwig I to a design by the neoclassical architect Leo von Klenze and opened to the public in 1830. The Glyptothek holds and exhibits a collection of sculptures, mosaics and reliefs from the Archaic (c. 650 BC) to the late Roman period (c. 550 AD). The collection goes back to Ludwig I of Bavaria, who, already as crown prince, started systematically acquiring antique sculptures since 1804.
