Glenesk Folk Museum and its collection

Glenesk Folk Museum

Glenesk Folk Museum is an independent museum set in the midst of Glenesk, one of the five Angus Glens. Opened in 1955 by its creator and original curator, local schoolteacher Greta Michie, the museum existed in a building called The Retreat. This was built for Captain Wemyss in the 1840s as a hunting lodge, and given to Greta by the local laird in order to start her museum. The lodge has now been replaced with a modern, but still personal building, with the intention of sharing knowledge about the history and contemporary lives of all inhabitants of Glenesk. The museum has a large and diverse collection, and frequently changes displays to provide insight into different aspects of glen lie. The collections include: locally-made clothing, decorative and applied art, fine art, costume and textiles, music, social history, natural sciences, numismatics, agriculture, and whisky. Our "staged" rooms will transport you back to 18th and 19th century life, while our gallery cases excite and inspire! Researchers and casual historians alike can browse our archival collections, including guardbooks compiled by Greta Michie to document as much about life in the glen as she could. From family history to scandals of the day, these books give a fascinating insight into lives gone by.
