La Mortella, also known as the Lady Walton Museum-garden, is a beautiful garden located in Forio, on the western side of the island of Ischia. This garden was created by Susana Walton, the wife of the renowned English composer William Walton. The garden has been open to the public since 1990, offering visitors a chance to explore its unique botanical collection and stunning landscapes.

The Two Parts of the Garden

The garden of La Mortella is divided into two distinct parts, each offering a unique experience. La Valle, designed by landscape architect Russell Page, is characterized by a subtropical climate, humid and protected from the wind. The Hill or upper garden, entirely conceived and developed by Lady Walton, features sunny and windy areas with vegetation from the Mediterranean areas. Each part of the garden provides a different perspective and a unique botanical experience.

The Botanical Collection

Covering an area of about 2 hectares, the garden of La Mortella is home to more than 3000 species of exotic and rare plants. The garden is also enriched by streams and ponds, fountains, pools, and watercourses that allow the cultivation of aquatic plants such as papyrus, lotus flowers, and tropical water lilies. This diverse collection of plants and the beautiful water features make the garden a unique destination for plant lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat.
