The Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, also known as Garrison Petawawa or CFB Petawawa, is a military base located near Petawawa. It is operated by the Canadian Army and has a rich history dating back to 1905 when it was established as the Petawawa Military Camp by the Department of Militia and Defence. The base was named after the Petawawa River that runs through the area.
During World War II, the base played a significant role as it housed three training facilities. These included two artillery and one engineering training center. At its peak in September 1942, approximately 12,515 soldiers were stationed at the base. This historical significance adds to the interest for visitors to the base.
The base is home to the 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters & Signal Squadron and their subordinate units. These units have been involved in several military actions, including in Afghanistan and Bosnia. This adds to the historical and military significance of the base, making it an interesting destination for visitors interested in military history.
