The Galileo Wissenswelt is a unique museum situated on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn in Ostholstein. Since 2018, the museum has expanded its reach with an additional building on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. This expansion allows visitors to explore more exhibits and gain a broader understanding of the museum's themes.
The Galileo Wissenswelt spans a total area of 3,200 square meters in its main building located in Burg on Fehmarn. The museum is divided into two main subject areas: 'Natural History' and 'Technology'. Additionally, the museum also houses an 'Overseas - Art, Culture and Peoples Forum' branch at the harbor in Burgstaaken on Fehmarn, which covers an area of 500 square meters.
The 'Natural History' section of the Galileo Wissenswelt offers visitors a chronological journey through the history of Earth, from the origin of life to humans and their environment. The section boasts a large collection of fossils, minerals, and dinosaur models. Highlights of this section include an original skeleton of a juvenile duck-billed dinosaur (Hypacrosaurus stebingeri), the largest original Mosasaurus skull (155 cm length) that can be seen in a German museum (Prognathodon curri), and the original skeleton of a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius).
The 'Technology' section of the Galileo Wissenswelt aims to make technical-physical phenomena understandable through interactive experiments and a collection of historical objects. A standout feature of this section is a lightning demonstration with a functional Tesla coil, which is demonstrated every hour. This interactive and engaging approach makes the 'Technology' section a fascinating experience for visitors of all ages.
