El fuerte de Cobos, originally known as Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana, is a preserved national historic monument. It is situated in the municipality of Campo Santo, in close proximity to the town of Cobos in the General Güemes department of the province of Salta, Argentina. This fortification served as an outpost, providing surveillance and protection for the city of Salta against attacks from the indigenous people of the Gran Chaco.
El fuerte de Cobos is situated at an altitude of 807 meters above sea level in a rural area of the Siancas valley. It is located 600 meters west of the town of Cobos and is connected to it by a road. This strategic location on a gentle slope overlooking a plain allowed it to block access to the Lerma valley from the east, controlling the eastern heads of the Mojotoro and Orqueta ravines that connect with the city of Salta.
El fuerte de Cobos was constructed using adobe, with its perimeter walls forming a square of 100 meters on each side. One of its vertices is oriented towards the northeast. At the center of the square, there is a two-story building equipped with balconies that provide a panoramic view of the surrounding terrain. This architectural design served a strategic purpose, allowing for effective surveillance and defense.
