The Francisco Pancho Coimbre Sports Museum, inaugurated on 21 January 1992, holds the distinction of being Puerto Rico's first sports museum. It is named after Ponce's own baseball legend, Pancho Coímbre, who is revered as the most feared and productive Puerto Rican baseball batter of all times.
The Francisco Pancho Coimbre Sports Museum is conveniently located on Lolita Tizol street, in close proximity to various other attractions. Among these is the old Spanish military barracks, adding to the rich historical context of the area.
Despite being a one-room museum, the Francisco Pancho Coimbre Sports Museum houses an extensive collection of photographs, documents, and memorabilia. These artifacts provide a glimpse into the early days of baseball in Puerto Rico, a time when professional players earned only $5 per game and played during daylight hours only.
