The Forte de São Paulo da Gamboa is a historic site located in the heart of Salvador, on the coast of the Brazilian state of Bahia. This fort dates back to a battery built from 1646, named after a gamboa or ditch on which it was built. The current structure was initiated in the government of the viceroy D. Pedro Antônio de Noronha Albuquerque and Sousa (1714-1718) and was completed in 1720.
Unfortunately, the Forte de São Paulo da Gamboa is not currently open to the public. Despite its cultural importance, the fort is in a precarious state of conservation. There are serious risks of collapses, disfigurement, and compromise of the structure. Efforts are being made to restore the fort, but no concrete intervention has been made by the federal public power so far.
