Fort Okanogan, also known as Fort Okanagan, was a trading post located in Okanogan County in the present-day US state of Washington. The fort was named after the Okanogan Indian tribe, reflecting the rich cultural history of the area.
In 1959, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission acquired a small area near the long-decayed fort. Archaeological investigations conducted in the area revealed remnants of the fort, including two distinct structures, an older and a newer one. These findings provide a tangible link to the fort's past.
The site where the remnants of the fort were found was flooded in 1967 following the construction of the Wells Dam. However, a small museum named the Fort Okanogan Interpretive Center was established in the State Park to preserve and showcase the history and artifacts of the fort.
In 2011, due to financial constraints, the State of Washington relinquished control of the visitor center and the State Park. The Colville Indians took over the management of these facilities, ensuring their continued operation and preservation.
