Source

Fort Knox, also known as Fort Knox State Park or Fort Knox State Historic Site, is a historic site located on the western bank of the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine. It is situated approximately 5 miles from the mouth of the river, making it a scenic location for visitors. The fort was built between 1844 and 1869, and it was the first fort in Maine to be constructed entirely of granite. It is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War.

Observation Tower at Fort Knox

In addition to its historical significance, Fort Knox also serves as the entry site for the observation tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. This bridge, which opened to the public in 2007, offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Visitors to the fort can access the observation tower and enjoy a unique perspective of the Penobscot River and the Maine landscape.

Preservation and Accessibility of Fort Knox

Today, Fort Knox is recognized as one of the best-preserved and most accessible forts in the United States. Almost all areas of the fort are open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the historic site at their own pace. The fort's preservation offers a unique insight into the military history of the United States and the strategic importance of the Penobscot River during the 19th century.
