Fort Croghan and its collection

Fort Croghan
Source

Fort Croghan, established on March 18, 1849, by Lt. C.H. Taylor, was part of a chain of forts built by the United States government to protect settlers along the Texas frontier. The fort was abandoned in 1855, but during its operational years, it played a crucial role in the defense system, extending from Fort Worth to Fort Inge near present-day Uvalde, Texas.

Preservation of Fort Croghan

Today, visitors can explore a small section of Fort Croghan, thanks to the efforts of the Burnet County Historical Society. In the 1960s, the society raised funds to purchase a portion of the old fort, preserving it for future generations to learn about the history of the Texas frontier.
