Fort Adams, located in Newport, Rhode Island, is a former United States Army post. It was established on July 4, 1799, as a First System coastal fortification. The fort was named after President John Adams, who was in office at the time of its establishment.
Construction of the Current Fort Adams
The current structure of Fort Adams was constructed between 1824 and 1857, under the Third System of coastal forts. Today, it is part of the Fort Adams State Park.
Fort Adams in Wars
During its active years, Fort Adams was involved in five major wars: the Mexican American War (1846-1848), the American Civil War (1861-1865), the Spanish American War (1898), World War I (1917-1918), and World War II (1941-1945). Despite its involvement in these conflicts, the fort never fired a shot in anger.
