Fort 1881, the former Fort aan den Hoek of Holland, was built in 1881 to defend the entrance to the Nieuwe Waterweg and the port of Rotterdam due to war threats. It is the best preserved armored fort in the Netherlands. There was never any fighting, but the fort played a crucial role in World War II. The meeting that the Council of Ministers held here determined the course of the war for the Netherlands. Discover this history for yourself in the museum of Fort 1881.
