Source

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has a vault that lies 26m below sea level, just above the Manhattan bedrock. As of 1927, the vault contained 10% of all official gold reserves in the world. It is currently the largest gold repository in the world, holding approximately 5,000 metric tons of gold. The gold is owned by many foreign nations, central banks, and international organizations. The bank is not the owner of the gold, but a guardian of the precious metal.

Public Tours to the Vault

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York offers public tours to visit the vault. This is a unique opportunity for visitors to see the largest gold repository in the world and learn about the role of the bank in the Federal Reserve System.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York - Museum and Learning Center offers visitors an informative experience about the US financial system and monetary policy. Many visitors appreciate the opportunity to learn about the history of currency, the role of the Federal Reserve, and economic concepts through interactive exhibits and displays. The gold vault tour is often mentioned as a highlight, providing a rare glimpse into the world of high-security banking.

However, some visitors note that the museum is relatively small and can be explored in a short amount of time. The security process to enter can be time-consuming, which some find inconvenient. A few reviewers mention that certain exhibits could benefit from updates or more in-depth information.

Overall, the museum is generally well-regarded for its educational value, especially for those interested in economics and finance. It's particularly suitable for students or adults looking to gain insights into the workings of the US financial system. While it may not appeal to everyone, those with an interest in the subject matter often find it worthwhile.
