Farnham Castle Keep and its collection

Farnham Castle Keep
Source

The motte and shell keep of a castle founded in 1138 by Bishop Henry of Blois. Long a residence of the wealthy bishops of Winchester, the accommodation in the keep was updated in the 1520s. The keep was abandoned after Civil War service: but much-altered parts of the medieval bishops' residence remain in private hands.

Farnham Castle Keep has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Farnham Castle Keep, located in the charming town of Farnham, England, offers visitors a glimpse into medieval history. The well-preserved keep stands as a testament to 12th-century Norman architecture and provides panoramic views of the surrounding area from its rooftop. Visitors appreciate the informative displays that detail the castle's history and its role in local events. The site is relatively small, which some find disappointing, but others see it as an advantage for a quick, focused visit. The volunteer staff are often praised for their knowledge and enthusiasm, enhancing the experience with interesting anecdotes. While the keep itself is the main attraction, some visitors note that additional interactive elements or guided tours could further improve the experience. The grounds are well-maintained and provide a pleasant area for a stroll or picnic. Access may be challenging for those with mobility issues due to steep stairs, which is a common drawback for historical structures of this type. Overall, Farnham Castle Keep offers a solid historical experience, particularly appealing to those interested in medieval architecture and local history.
