Fantoft Stave Church and its collection

Fantoft Stave Church
Source

The Fantoft Stave Church that stands today is a reconstruction of the original church that tragically burned down in 1992. The original church was built around the year 1150 and was located in Fortun in Sogn. It was moved and rebuilt in Fantoft in 1883. The reconstruction of the church after the fire was a significant challenge due to the lack of knowledge and experience in building stave churches, which hadn't been done in Norway for many centuries. Despite these challenges, the reconstructed church was completed and inaugurated in 1997.

Materials and Artifacts in the Fantoft Stave Church

The timber used for the reconstruction of the Fantoft Stave Church was sourced from Kaupanger. The crucifix in the choir, a significant feature of the church, was carved by Sven Valevatn and painted by Solrun Nes. Despite the fire, a few original elements from the previous church were salvaged and incorporated into the new structure. These include the 'wish stone', possibly a relic, now found in one of the walls, and the cross.

Fantoft Stave Church Reviews

Fantoft Stave Church has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Fantoft Stave Church, located in Bergen, Norway, offers visitors a glimpse into medieval Norwegian architecture. Originally built in 1150 and reconstructed after a fire in 1992, this wooden church showcases intricate carvings and traditional stave church design. While small in size, many visitors find its dark wooden interior atmospheric and historically significant. The surrounding forest adds to the serene environment. However, some reviewers note that the interior can feel cramped, and the limited information provided on-site may leave some wanting more historical context. The entrance fee is considered somewhat high by some given the brief nature of most visits. Despite these minor drawbacks, many visitors appreciate the church's unique architecture and its role in preserving Norwegian cultural heritage. For those interested in historical structures or Norwegian history, Fantoft Stave Church can be a worthwhile stop, though expectations should be managed regarding its size and depth of on-site interpretation.
