The Chelmsford Museum is located in the historic Oaklands House, a Grade II Listed building situated off Moulsham Street in Chelmsford, Essex. This architectural gem was designed by Charles Pertwee for Frederick Wells, a director of the Chelmsford Brewery, and was completed by 1865. The building, which features an elaborate campanile, served as a hospital during the First World War and has been home to the Chelmsford Museum since 1930.

The Essex Regiment Museum in Chelmsford, England, offers visitors an informative look into the history of the Essex Regiment. The museum houses a collection of military artifacts, uniforms, medals, and weapons that tell the story of the regiment's service from its formation to its eventual amalgamation. Visitors appreciate the well-organized displays and the depth of information provided about the regiment's involvement in various conflicts. The museum's strength lies in its ability to present personal stories and experiences of soldiers, which adds a human touch to the exhibits. However, some visitors note that the museum is relatively small and can be explored thoroughly in a short time. The limited interactive elements and somewhat dated presentation style may not appeal to all visitors, especially younger ones. Despite these limitations, many find the museum to be a valuable resource for those interested in military history or local heritage. The staff is generally described as knowledgeable and helpful, enhancing the overall experience. While not a major tourist attraction, the Essex Regiment Museum serves as a respectful tribute to the men who served in the regiment and provides a focused, educational experience for those with an interest in this specific area of military history.
