El Pendo Cave, located in Escobedo de Camargo, Spain, offers visitors a glimpse into prehistoric life and art. The cave features impressive rock formations and well-preserved Paleolithic cave paintings, some dating back over 20,000 years. Guided tours are available, providing informative explanations about the cave's history and significance. The site is well-maintained and includes a small museum with additional artifacts and information. Some visitors note that the cave can be chilly and damp, so appropriate clothing is recommended. The access to the cave involves a short walk, which may be challenging for those with mobility issues. While the cave itself is the main attraction, some reviewers mention that the experience could be enhanced with more interactive displays or multimedia presentations. Overall, El Pendo Cave offers an educational and intriguing experience for those interested in prehistory and cave art, though it may not appeal to everyone.
The cave is amazing. It has an extensive steel walkway leading to viewing points highlighting the archaeological discoveries relating to different ages. It is huge, bowl-shaped, and the paintings are skilfully lit to recreate the “cinema-screen” that would have greeted those who were able to see it naturally, by daylight, 20 thousand years ago. My guide was excellent with very good English and an infectious enthusiasm for this archeological wonder and its curious history of discovery. I found booking a tour online easy. The website has a lot of information. The route is signposted but involves narrow tarmac roads. There is a large carpark which is locked except at visiting times. It is cold and definitely not a place for stiletto heels.
