The Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum County, also known as the Zanesville Historical Society, is a non-profit organization based in Zanesville, Ohio. Its mission is to preserve the history of the Zanesville and Muskingum County region. This society operates several significant historical sites in and around Zanesville, contributing to the rich historical tapestry of the area.
Among the historical sites operated by the society are the Dr. Increase Mathews House and the Stone Academy. The Dr. Increase Mathews House was built in 1805 by a founder of the town, making it a significant part of Zanesville's history. The Stone Academy, erected in 1809, was considered as a possible state capitol, adding another layer of historical significance to the area.
The society is also home to the world's "largest and most representative collection" of Weller art pottery. This collection was donated to the society in 1958. Weller, a renowned pottery company, operated in Zanesville until 1948, making this collection a significant part of the city's cultural heritage.
