The Devils Rope Museum in McLean, Texas offers visitors an unexpected look into the history of barbed wire and fencing in the American West. This small, quirky museum houses an extensive collection of barbed wire samples, fencing tools, and related memorabilia. Visitors often appreciate the depth of information provided about this niche topic, finding it more engaging than they initially expected. The museum also features exhibits on local history and Route 66, adding context to the area's development. While some reviewers note that the museum's presentation can feel dated or cluttered, many find the volunteer staff to be knowledgeable and passionate. The museum's gift shop offers unique souvenirs related to its theme. Though not a mainstream attraction, the Devils Rope Museum provides an offbeat and educational experience for those interested in Western history or unusual collections.
The Devil's Rope museum was much more than I expected. It has much more to offer than just displays of types of wire. There is a lot of Texas western heritage shown such as cattle brands and all sorts of tools used by cowboys. The route 66 room has a lot of genuine 66 local artifacts such as business signs and souvenirs. As well as a recreation of a 1950's diner. It also has a very large gift shop selling not only the usual souvenirs but also real antique wires and western collectables. Well worth the stop. And it sits right in the middle of route 66 were it split and went through McLean.
