De Mesdag Collectie has 3 ratings.
De Mesdag Collectie, located in The Hague, Netherlands, is a small but significant museum showcasing the personal art collection of Dutch painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag and his wife Sientje. The museum is housed in the former residence of the Mesdag family, providing visitors with an intimate glimpse into the artistic tastes of the late 19th century.
The collection primarily features works from the Hague School and Barbizon School, including paintings, drawings, and ceramics. Visitors often appreciate the opportunity to see lesser-known works by famous artists such as Corot, Daubigny, and Millet, alongside pieces by Mesdag himself and other Dutch artists of the period.
The museum's atmosphere is frequently described as peaceful and nostalgic, with the original interior largely preserved. This allows visitors to experience the art in a setting similar to how it would have been displayed during Mesdag's lifetime. The small size of the museum means that it can be thoroughly explored in about an hour, making it a manageable visit for those with limited time.
Some visitors note that the museum can feel a bit dated and could benefit from more informative displays or audio guides to provide context for the artworks. Additionally, the narrow staircases and small rooms may pose accessibility challenges for some visitors.
Despite these minor drawbacks, many visitors find the De Mesdag Collectie to be a worthwhile stop for art enthusiasts, particularly those interested in 19th-century Dutch and French painting. The museum offers a more personal and intimate experience compared to larger, more crowded art institutions in The Hague.
Quite a small museum with an interesting collection of paintings, especially Barbizon art. The paintings the museum displays were collected by Mesdag at the time. A little gem in The Hague!
