Dahesh Museum of Art and its collection

Dahesh Museum of Art
Source

The Dahesh Museum of Art holds a unique position in the United States as the only museum dedicated to the collection and exhibition of European academic art from the 19th and 20th centuries. This focus provides a distinctive perspective on the art world during these periods, offering visitors a chance to explore a specific genre of art that is not commonly highlighted in other museums.

Museum's Location and Changes

The Dahesh Museum of Art has undergone several changes in location over the years. After closing its regular exhibition space in 2008, the museum was temporarily available only online and in traveling exhibitions. However, in early 2012, the museum reopened an office and gift shop in Manhattan's Hudson Square neighborhood, near SoHo. Renovations began in 2015 on the museum's new permanent home at 178 East 64th Street, with the opening anticipated in winter 2019–2020.

Dahesh Museum of Art has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Dahesh Museum of Art in New York offers a focused collection of 19th-century European academic art. Visitors appreciate the museum's commitment to showcasing lesser-known artists and styles from this period. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, providing a comprehensive look at academic art traditions.

Some reviewers note that the museum's relatively small size allows for an intimate and manageable viewing experience. The curated exhibitions are generally well-received, with many praising the informative labels and contextual information provided.

On the downside, a few visitors mention that the museum's niche focus might not appeal to everyone, particularly those seeking more diverse or contemporary art experiences. Additionally, some reviewers point out that the museum's location and limited hours can make it less accessible compared to other New York City art institutions.

The museum's temporary location and occasional closures between exhibitions have been sources of confusion for some visitors, so it's advisable to check their website for current information before planning a visit.

Overall, the Dahesh Museum of Art offers a specialized art experience that is appreciated by those interested in 19th-century European academic art, but may not be a top priority for all art enthusiasts visiting New York.
