The Dacotah Prairie Museum, formerly known as the Western Union Building, is a historic bank building located in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Transition to a Museum
In 1970, the building was generously donated to Brown County to be used as a museum. It opened its doors as the Dacotah Prairie Museum in October of the same year. By 1980, the museum became the sole occupant of the building, marking a new chapter in its history. Today, it continues to serve as a cultural and historical hub for the city and its visitors.
Architectural Significance
The Dacotah Prairie Museum is a fine example of Romanesque Revival architecture. The three-story building is constructed of red brick laid in a running bond pattern. It features three main entrances, each framed by a large arch and set a few steps above street level.
